Doctor-led
Medical Weight Management
Our doctor-led weight-management service combines medical assessment, blood testing, lifestyle support and, where appropriate, prescription weight-loss treatment. The aim is not simply to prescribe medication, but to understand the factors affecting your weight, identify associated health risks and agree a treatment plan that can be monitored safely over time.
How the service works
Who the service is for
Prescription weight-management treatment may be appropriate for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above with a weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, fatty liver disease, polycystic ovary syndrome or obstructive sleep apnoea. Final eligibility is based on clinical assessment.
Before your first consultation
We arrange baseline blood tests at Wayfarer before the first doctor appointment. These allow us to look for relevant metabolic or medical issues and provide a safer starting point for treatment. Once the results are available, the first consultation is booked as a double appointment, allowing time to review your medical history, weight history, blood results, lifestyle, goals and the available treatment options.
Treatment options
Where medication is appropriate, there are now both injectable and oral treatment options. Depending on clinical suitability and availability, these may include tirzepatide (Mounjaro), injectable semaglutide (Wegovy), oral semaglutide (Wegovy tablets) and Foundayo (orforglipron) where available. Treatment is individualised rather than everybody being started on the same medication.
Ongoing monitoring
Weight-management medication requires ongoing medical supervision. After starting treatment, patients are normally reviewed after approximately two months, followed by three-monthly face-to-face reviews. Repeat blood tests are arranged when clinically appropriate, usually around six-monthly during ongoing treatment and sooner where needed. All prescribing and ongoing medication reviews through this service are carried out face to face.
Calculate your BMI
A guide to whether prescription weight-management treatment may be appropriate. Treatment is generally considered where BMI is 30 or above, or 27 or above alongside a weight-related health condition. Eligibility is always confirmed by clinical assessment.
Enter your height and weight to see your BMI.
BMI does not account for muscle mass, body composition or ethnicity, so it is a guide rather than a diagnosis.
Common questions
Do I need blood tests before starting treatment?
Yes. We arrange baseline blood tests before your initial weight-management consultation so that the results can be reviewed alongside your medical history and treatment options.
Do I qualify for weight-loss medication?
Treatment is generally considered where BMI is 30 or above, or 27 or above in someone with an associated weight-related medical condition. Your doctor will confirm whether treatment is suitable after assessing you.
Can I calculate my BMI before booking?
Yes. There is a BMI calculator on this page. It is a guide only, and eligibility for treatment is always confirmed by clinical assessment.
Do you only offer injections?
No. Depending on suitability and availability, both oral and injectable weight-management medicines can be discussed.
How often will I need to be reviewed?
The first appointment is a double consultation. If medication is started, we normally review you at around two months and then approximately every three months, with blood monitoring as required.
Can the appointments be done remotely?
Our weight-management prescribing and follow-up appointments are carried out face to face so that treatment can be monitored appropriately.
Is medication all that is involved?
No. Medication can be a useful tool, but weight, metabolic health, nutrition, physical activity, side effects, muscle preservation and longer-term maintenance all form part of the discussion.
