Sports & Exercise Medicine

Specialist care for injuries, movement and recovery

Whether you are a competitive athlete, enjoy occasional exercise or are struggling with an injury affecting everyday life, our Sports & Exercise Medicine service provides specialist assessment and individually tailored treatment.

Led by Dr Eva Carneiro, Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine, the service combines experience from elite professional sport with a practical, personalised approach to injury management, rehabilitation and recovery.

What we can help with

Sports injuries

Assessment and treatment of muscle strains, ligament injuries, joint injuries and other problems arising during sport or exercise.

Tendon and joint conditions

Specialist assessment of tendinopathy, overuse injuries and persistent or recurrent joint and tendon pain.

Persistent and complex injuries

Investigation and management of longstanding musculoskeletal problems, particularly where previous treatment has not resolved symptoms.

Rehabilitation and return to sport

Individualised recovery planning, rehabilitation advice and guidance on returning safely to exercise, training or competition.

Injury prevention and exercise health

Advice on reducing injury risk, managing training demands and maintaining an active lifestyle.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections

PRP therapy uses a concentrated preparation of platelets taken from a patient's own blood, which is then injected into the affected area.

Dr Carneiro offers PRP injections for selected tendon and joint conditions. Suitability is determined following specialist assessment, as evidence of benefit varies depending on the condition being treated.

Joined-up care at Wayfarer

Our Sports & Exercise Medicine service works closely with our physiotherapy team, including Joyce Evans, who specialises in sports and musculoskeletal rehabilitation.

Dr Carneiro also performs many of her own diagnostic ultrasound examinations. Where appropriate, additional imaging and ultrasound-guided procedures can be arranged with our consultant radiologist, Dr Christopher Rodriguez.

This allows specialist assessment, imaging, treatment and rehabilitation to be coordinated within Wayfarer.

Common questions

Do I need to be an athlete to see a sports medicine consultant?

Not at all. Sports and Exercise Medicine is relevant to anyone experiencing muscle, tendon, ligament or joint problems, whether you are a competitive athlete, an occasional exerciser or simply struggling with an injury affecting everyday life.

How is sports medicine different from physiotherapy?

A sports medicine consultant is a specialist doctor who diagnoses injuries, investigates more complex problems and advises on medical treatment and rehabilitation. Physiotherapists focus on restoring movement, strength and function through treatment and exercise-based rehabilitation. The two often work closely together.

What are PRP injections, and do you offer them?

Yes. Dr Carneiro offers platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections for selected tendon and joint conditions. PRP uses a sample of your own blood, processed to concentrate the platelets before being injected into the affected area. It is not suitable for every condition, and Dr Carneiro will discuss whether it is an appropriate option following assessment.

Can I see Dr Carneiro for an old or persistent injury?

Yes. Persistent pain, recurrent injuries and difficulty returning to activity are all common reasons to seek a specialist opinion, particularly where previous treatment has not fully resolved the problem.
